Couples Therapy for Black Relationships in Atlanta: Build a Connection That Feels as Good as It Looks
You love each other. But lately it feels like you're living parallel lives — talking past each other, navigating the same arguments in circles, or simply going through the motions. The relationship looks fine from the outside. But inside, you both know something is missing.
That disconnect — between how your relationship appears and how it actually feels — is exactly what we help couples close.
At Javery Integrative Wellness Services (JIWS), we offer couples therapy designed specifically for Black relationships in Atlanta and across Georgia. Our approach is culturally responsive, holistic, and grounded in a deep understanding of what it means to build a partnership while navigating the unique pressures Black couples face — from generational patterns to systemic stress to the weight of showing up strong for everyone else.
Does This Sound Like Your Relationship?
You don't have to be in crisis to benefit from couples therapy. Many of the couples who come to JIWS are functional, committed, and love each other deeply — and they're struggling in ways that are hard to put into words.
You might recognize your relationship in some of these:
The same argument keeps coming up, just with different words
You've stopped sharing certain things because it's easier than dealing with the reaction
Intimacy — emotional or physical — has faded and you're not sure how to get it back
You're both exhausted from work, family, and life, and the relationship keeps getting whatever's left over
You want to build something lasting together but aren't sure you're moving in the same direction
One or both of you are carrying stress from outside the relationship that keeps showing up inside it
Therapy at JIWS creates a space where both of you can be heard — not to assign blame, but to build something better together.
What Couples Therapy at JIWS Actually Looks Like
Sessions at JIWS are 50 minutes, held virtually via our secure telehealth platform — accessible from anywhere in Georgia, whether you're in Atlanta, Stockbridge, Marietta, or beyond.
You'll work with Takeia Mays, MSW, JIWS's dedicated couples therapist. Takeia specializes in relational healing, intimacy, and communication for Black couples, and brings a holistic, culturally informed approach to every session. You won't need to spend your time explaining your cultural context — she already understands it.
Our approach draws on evidence-based methods including Solution Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), adapted to honor the specific dynamics of Black relationships and the generational patterns that often show up within them.
Please note: Couples therapy at JIWS is SELF-PAY ONLY. Sessions are $145. Insurance is not accepted for couples sessions.
What We Work On Together
Communication & Conflict
When couples stop communicating well, it's rarely because they don't care — it's usually because old patterns are running the show. We help you identify those patterns, understand where they came from, and build communication skills that actually work for your relationship.
Emotional & Physical Intimacy
Intimacy doesn't just fade on its own — it erodes under the weight of stress, disconnection, and unspoken needs. We create space to address what's really going on and rebuild connection at every level.
Generational Patterns in Relationships
What you saw modeled growing up shapes how you show up in your relationship — often in ways you don't even realize. We help couples identify inherited patterns around love, conflict, roles, and expectations, and consciously choose something different.
Premarital Counseling
Starting strong is one of the best investments a couple can make. Premarital counseling at JIWS helps you build a shared foundation — navigating expectations, communication styles, family dynamics, and the real conversations most couples avoid until they become problems.
Navigating External Stress Together
Racial trauma, workplace stress, financial pressure, family obligations — all of it comes home with you. We help couples build the tools to support each other through external stressors without letting them damage the relationship from the inside.
Fertility & Postpartum Support
The journey to parenthood — whether through fertility treatment, pregnancy, or the postpartum period — can put enormous pressure on a relationship. We offer specialized support for couples navigating these transitions with compassion and cultural awareness.
Why Black Couples Choose JIWS
We specialize exclusively in serving Black women, couples, and families. Couples therapy at JIWS isn't a generic service with a diversity checkbox. Our entire practice is built around the specific experiences, strengths, and challenges of Black relationships — including the cultural expectations, community pressures, and generational patterns that shape them.
We focus on the relationship, not just the conflict. The goal isn't to get through arguments more efficiently. It's to help you build a partnership that feels genuinely fulfilling — one where both of you are seen, valued, and growing together.
We meet you where you are. Whether you're in a place of crisis or simply feeling the slow drift of two people who love each other but have stopped connecting, there's a place for you here.
We offer flexible virtual access. All sessions are held via telehealth so you can attend from wherever you are in Georgia — together or from separate locations if needed.
