How Does Your Life Turn You On? Reclaiming Pleasure in Everyday Moments
Reframing Pleasure Beyond the Bedroom
When you hear the word “pleasure,” what comes to mind?
For many, pleasure is associated with intimacy and romance, but true pleasure extends far beyond the bedroom. It’s the electric feeling of joy, the moments of self-expression that make you feel alive, and the deep connection to yourself and the world around you.
As Black women, we’ve been conditioned to prioritize productivity over pleasure, constantly giving to others while leaving little space for our own joy.
But what if you gave yourself permission to be turned on by life? To find sensuality in everyday experiences? To reclaim pleasure as a necessary and sacred part of your existence?
Identifying What Turns You On
Pleasure is personal, and it’s often found in the smallest moments—moments we may not even realize are igniting something deep within us. Take a moment to reflect:
When do you feel most alive?
What activities make you lose track of time?
What sensations bring you peace, excitement, or deep satisfaction?
Maybe it’s the way the sun warms your skin during a morning walk, the rhythm of your body swaying to your favorite song, or the feeling of fresh sheets against your skin after a long bath. Recognizing these moments is the first step to reclaiming pleasure in your life.
The Importance of Pleasure in Our Lives
Pleasure isn’t a luxury—it’s a vital part of well-being. Research shows that experiencing joy and pleasure enhances mental health, reduces stress, and even boosts physical health. Yet, for generations, Black women have been taught to suppress their desires, placing duty over delight. Breaking this cycle means shifting the narrative: pleasure is not selfish—it’s self-care.
When you embrace pleasure, you:
Increase your capacity for joy and fulfillment.
Strengthen your connection to yourself and your desires.
Create a ripple effect, inspiring other women to prioritize their own well-being.
Practical Ways to Turn Your Life On
Bringing more pleasure into your daily life doesn’t have to be complicated. It starts with intention and small, consistent actions. Here are some ways to embrace sensuality and joy every day:
Explore Sensuality Through Your Senses
Pleasure is deeply rooted in the senses. Engage with life through:
Touch: Indulge in soft fabrics, luxurious baths, or a self-massage with aromatic oils.
Sound: Listen to music that moves your soul or sit in silence and let nature’s sounds soothe you.
Taste: Savor your meals instead of rushing through them. Try new flavors and textures that excite you.
Sight: Surround yourself with beauty—whether it’s fresh flowers, candlelight, or art that inspires you.
Smell: Use essential oils, incense, or fresh herbs to create an environment that makes you feel good.
Prioritize Joyful Activities
Pleasure doesn’t always have to be sensual—it can be playful, creative, and adventurous. Make time for:
Dancing freely in your living room.
Cooking meals that delight your taste buds.
Journaling or expressing yourself through art.
Spending time in nature to reconnect with yourself.
Be Intentional About Pleasure
Set aside at least 10 minutes a day for something that brings you joy.
Check in with yourself regularly: Am I allowing myself to enjoy life, or am I just surviving?
Release guilt around pleasure—you deserve to feel good.
Give Yourself Permission to Feel Alive
It’s time to reclaim your right to pleasure. Life should not be a constant grind; it should be filled with moments that turn you on, light you up, and make you feel whole. So, I challenge you: what turns you on?
